The Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival (OCYSF) strategic plan was developed by its board of directors which convened for three separate 3-hour meetings facilitated by arts management consultant Andrew Apter. Just entering its third year of operations, OCYSF has enjoyed unique success in launching a complex festival. It is to OCYSF’s credit that it recognizes its vulnerabilities along with taking deserved pride in its remarkable achievements. The plan reflects the organization’s ambitions coupled with a practical approach to sustaining and building upon its success.

Prior to the first workshop the board was asked to respond to four prompts which encouraged reflection on the existing mission, goals, and programs. [See Appendix I]. The results provided context for discussion at the first workshop, which was held on August 8, 2018. In addition to familiarizing the board with the strategic planning process. The meeting included exercises which encouraged reflection on the organization’s mission and vision. Four key themes emerged which became the basis for articulating OCYSF’s organizational goals. (A summary of the meeting can be found in Appendix II.)

In the interim between the first and second workshop, four key stakeholder interviews were conducted by phone. (See Appendix III). Coupled with the information generated at the first workshop, the board was well prepared to engage in a robust discussion of the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges (SWOC) at the September 19, 2018 meeting. The results are shown in the grid below.
